Higher ed funnel: prospective through confirmed students

Marketing emails are only as good as the strategy behind them. Lucky for you, I love puzzles, and putting together an email funnel is just like one big, exciting puzzle to me!

One of the largest funnels I’ve worked on was in higher education, and included five “customer” identities: prospective students (who may have never even heard of our college before), inquiries (who had expressed some kind of interest in our college), applicants, admitted students, and confirmed students.

A 2021-22 funnel I built for a college’s admissions communications included over 60 emails from the prospective through the admitted phase, with a combined open rate of 37.4%, and an average conversion rate of 7.7%.

I also built three-phase funnel for confirmed students that walked them through their next steps to enroll and begin their college journey. This funnel was less promotional than it was transactional and information-oriented.
